Japanese lacquerware. Series of 2 books on the problems of Japanese lacquerware as an artistic material, bilingual edition (Polish-English), digital form (e-book).

The Society was awarded a grant under the KPO. GRANTS 2024. A2.5.1: Programme to support the activities of cultural and creative industries actors to stimulate their development contest, a grant for further literature on conservation issues.

A digital (ePUB and mobi) edition of 2 items of conservation literature was supported, opening the planned series. The first is ‘Japanese Lacquerware. An introduction to conservation ‘ by Joanna Koryciarz -Kitamikado. The book is intended as an introduction to the subject of Japanese lacquerware – one of the most important treasures of the Far East – as a material used for the decoration of various types of objects that are now valuable collections, both in museums and in private hands. Topics covered include the history of decorative techniques and the development of methods and materials, the history and development of Japanese lacquerware, the phenomenon of export lacquerware, and an introduction to the conservation of lacquerware, including conservation according to Japanese principles, also based on selected examples. The author has participated in projects organised by the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties in Tokyo and ICCROM, as well as the conservation of valuable artefacts from European collections (cooperation between Japanese and European experts in conservation, using knowledge from both cultures). The second item is ‘Japanese export lacquerware shu-damenuri and tame-sukashi’ by Katarzyna Dróżdż. The book will consider historical-artistic, constructional and technological-preservation aspects of Japanese export furniture decorated with lacquer from the early 20th century. The author is the winner of the L. Torwirt Award for an outstanding theoretical, research and conservation thesis defended at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

She is currently working at the National Museum in Poznan in the Ethnographic Objects Conservation Studio.

Publication is planned for December 2024.
