The book opens a series on the history and conservation issues related to Japanese lacquer and the wares decorated with it. The series is aimed at conservators, curators of collections and exhibitions, and collectors.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: independent conservator of oriental lacquer, member of the Polish Institute of World Art Studies

Graduate of the Higher School of Artistic Crafts and Management, and the University of Wrocław. Graduate of the School of Arts and Crafts and Management AND the University of Wrocław. She learned urushi lacquer conservation from Japanese masters S. Shimaguchi, S. Kitamura and T. Matsumoto. She has participated in international conservation courses organised by ICCROM and Tobunken (Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Property). She is fluent in Japanese. Participant of numerous conferences devoted to Japanese lacquer. She collaborates with Polish art and cultural institutions and museums, currently with the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów, the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw and the National Museum in Poznań. She is also the curator of a private Warsaw collection of lacquer-decorated furniture. For several years she has been consulting pro bono at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw on student conservation work in the field of Japanese lacquer. The result of long-term cooperation with the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology in Krakow, planned for autumn 2025, is the largest exhibition to date in Poland devoted to Japanese lacquer artefacts in Polish museum and private collections. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication popularising this niche but graceful subject. In addition to her activity in strictly research and conservation projects, Joanna Koryciarz-Kitamikado runs courses in the historical applied lacquer art of Kintsugi, which are very popular.
