In solidarity with Ukraine.

28 February 2022Antoni Bagiński

Our Association strongly condemns the armed invasion of independent Ukraine by Russia and Belarus.

We extend our support and solidarity to our Ukrainian friends in Lviv and Zhovkva, to the staff of the local museums, and to the conservators who are currently working to safeguard cultural heritage and historical artefacts from the effects of potential bombing and looting.

We stand with Ukraine!

CHRONICLE OF THE ASSOCIATION’S ACTIVITIES (updated).

2–8 MARCH. The Society establishes contacts with Ukrainian conservators responsible for safeguarding Lviv’s monuments and collections. With the help of the Association’s supporters, we identify needs and assess the Polish market for refractory materials. We purchase the first pilot batch of suitable materials and successfully transport them across the border.

7–29 MARCH. The Association carries out a commission from the POLONIKA National Institute of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad.

The grant received was allocated to two purposes:

The purchase of materials necessary for the project, carried out in Poland by the ‘Warsaw’ team.

On-site conservation work carried out by the contracted ‘Lviv’ conservation team.

Under the contract, security measures were implemented for the following buildings and their fixtures and fittings:

The Archcathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lviv

The Armenian Cathedral

St. Jura’s Cathedral

The Orthodox Church of St. John Chrysostom (formerly the Franciscan Sisters’ Church)

5–15 APRIL. The Society, together with its supporters, is collecting and organising the transport of food and medicines for the residents of Zhovkva and the refugees staying there. The same shipment includes conservation materials for safeguarding archival records, intended for the Volhynia Museum in Lutsk and the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv. Some of these materials were entrusted to the Society by the conservation team at the London Metropolitan Archives.

14 APRIL – 31 MAY. The Society is carrying out a commission from the National Institute of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad ‘Polonika’. The commission involves the purchase and delivery of copper sheet metal for the Lviv Regional State Administration to cover the roof of the Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration in the village of Zarudka in the Lviv region.
